The Death of the Microtrend

👚👖👡

Over the past few years, fleeting styles and quick fixes (aka the mircotrend) have taken over.

We’re not referring to the “in” colors and the current style of boot - those will always be a welcome influence in the fashion scene. What we are referring to are the insanely specific, “themes” that have driven fast fashion the past few years. (Think “coastal grandma” of Summer 2024 and more recently “the Mob Wife aesthestic”)

We are allll guilty of falling for at least one of these, but we’re starting to see a positive switch in the other direction…

How We Got Here

Unsurprisingly, social media and the influencer culture are partly to blame for the microtrend phenomenon. Because TikTok and Instagram make “what everyone is wearing” easily viewable, trends can catch fire much quicker than they could in the past.

The problem with this? By the time you purchase something that aligns with a trend you saw - the next big trend is already hitting the social media world, and what you bought is no longer in style.

The Rise of “Slow Fashion”

Perhaps as a reaction to the frustration of the microtrend phase, "slow fashion" has started to gain traction. We’re seeing a shift toward investing in timeless pieces that will last for years.

This shift also aligns with the recent outrage over fast fashion’s lack of environmental sustainability and mindful consumption.

A More Thoughtful Approach To Personal Fashion

Here at STC, we often discuss our belief in the power of an investment piece. Instead of buying three items that will be popular for one season, buy one good-quality item that will last you for years. (And that you really like!)

Not a hot take, but it’s easier said than done in our instant gratification society, and certainly worth it if you are trying to build a timeless closet.

Luckily, we do think we’re starting to see a shift. The once-dominant craze of chasing microtrends is gradually giving way to a more thoughtful approach to style, one that prioritizes timelessness, individuality, and long-term value over the fast-paced trend cycle.

A Good Place to Start…

If you do want to lean into a more investment focused closet, these are the areas we would start:
